Santa Cruz Sheep

The Santa Cruz sheep have lived in a feral state on the Santa Cruz Island off of California for over 70 years. They descended from several breeds mainly Merino, Rambouillet & Churro. They are either black or white, horned or polled, they are lightweight & hardy. In 1980 the Nature Conservancy & American Livestock Breeders Conservancy cooperated to remove them from the Santa Cruz Island to protect the island's ecosystem. Less than 400 of these sheep remain today is small flocks throughout the U.S. The ALBC has determined their status as critical. More breeders are needed to prevent extinction. The SVF Foundation in Rhode Island has embryos, semen and germ plasm frozen to use at a future time. We are proud to be a part of this preservation project.
