Q & A Page

We get asked a lot of questions about the animals here at the zoo. This page has some of those questions as well as my answers.

Q: Where do the animals go in the winter?
A: All of our animals stay here year round. Our tropical animals have to go inside when weather gets cold and we heat them. We heat several buildings.

Q: How much does it cost to feed the animals?
A: Our weekly grocery bill breaks down as follows:
    meat  $460
    hay  $180
    grain  $20
    produce  $38
    milk formula  $33
    specialty feeds  $48
    dog food  $40
    snake food  $13
    Total  $832 per week
Your admission fees & donations help us pay for feed. Because we are a private zoo we don't get government or outside funding.

Q: Where do you get the animals you exhibit here?
A: Most of our animals are purchased from people who breed various species in captivity. A few animals are rescues from people who can no longer keep them due to changing laws, death or illness of a keeper or moving to places where the animals can't go along. We can not take in any animals taken from the wild such as fawns, squirrels, racoons, etc. that people find.

Q: What do tigers eat?
A: Tigers, like all our exotic cats, are obligate carnivores and eat only raw meat. A tiger can eat up to 50 lbs of meat in one feeding if allowed to and then he fasts for several days.

Q: Is the zoo open year round?
A: No, we are open from Memorial Day weekend until mid-October. When the cooler weather comes & the tropical animals go in we have to close.

Q: What's the Adoption Program? Do I get to take my animal home?
A: Our adoption program helps to support various animals that people choose. The adoption fee is for 1 year and your name goes on that animal as its zoo parent. Check out our adoption page for more information. No, you don't take your animal home. It stays here as we have the proper feed and facilities for them.

Q: Do you go in with those big cats?
A: No, we don't enter an adult large cat enclosure unless the cat is in its lock out. All of our cats are tame and hand raised but they could seriously injure some one even in play.
